Xbox Live

Scheduled for release on 11.8.11, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 promises to be the best selling console game this year, if not of all time. As a result of some of this excitement, a lot of gamers have been trying everything possible to get their hands on a copy before the scheduled release date. Some copies have even appeared on Ebay for as much as $1,700. Well word has officially come from Xbox Live’s Stephen Toulouse that doing so “may impact your account!” While the specific details of this “impact” were not disclosed, I think we can safely say that gamers run the risk of having their Xbox Live accounts banned.

Infinity Ward

One of the things I frequently hear on this blog is that gamers are tired of getting ripped off by game companies.  They feel that companies like Infinity Ward are being  just plain greedy by selling a new game for $60, only to release additional map packs and downloadable content (DLC) a couple of months, if not weeks, after a game’s release.  Since I am gamer just like you, I completely understand where this outrage is coming from.  However, there are some major developments in the gaming community that you need to be aware off that is largely responsible for some of these changes.

By far the factor most responsible for the sudden influx of paid DLC is a name that you probably know all to well: GameStop.  The leading retailer in computer and console games has made an absolute killing in the used games business as cash strapped gamers buy used in an effort to save a little cash.   Unfortunately, this major cash source has come at the expense of game development companies and publishers.

The best explanation I have heard of the situation would be to compare it to the movie industry.  When a new movie is released, cinemas like Regal and AMC pay a portion of each movie ticket sold to the actual movie studio.  Likewise, when a new game is sold, retailers like Gamestop pass on a portion of the sales to the actual game developers.  However, in the used game market, Gamestop keeps all of the profits.  It’s litteraly like having a movie theater like AMC sell the same physical movie ticket to consumers over and over again.   Movie studios would make a profit from the original ticket sale but be cut out of any future profits.

That’s exactly what’s going on in the gaming industry right now.  When you take into consideration that the used game market accounts for an ever increasing portion of total game sales, it’s easy to see why studios like Infinity Ward are a little bit upset.  This situation is even worse on games released on the PS3. That’s because studios who release games on the PS3, also maintain the servers needed to support multiplayer.  So you have the situation where a studio gets the profit from 2 million physical copies sold, but has to maintain the servers for 4 million users.   As you can imagine, this isn’t something that studios very happy about.

So what are companies like Infinity Ward to do when faced with declining profits? Release more DLC!!!  More and more studios are starting to view DLC as not a way of ripping off gamers, but rather getting profits to previous levels.  That levels customers like us footing the bill.

Looking at the design, it’s easy to see the influence from Modern Warfare 2′s cover art.  They both seem to feature a soldier walking through flames holding his trusty Commando assault rifle.

Continue reading »]]> If we had any doubts that the third installment in the Modern Warfare franchise was slatted for release later on this year, this should put all doubts to rest. It turns out that Gamestop, one of the largest game retailers, has started taking pre-orders of Modern Warfare 3.  Available for $59.99, the order includes a free poster and is available for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.  Despite many rumors, however, absolutely no mention was of a version for the Wii.

Continue reading »]]> Well it turns out that the recent trailer released on the website site findmakarov.com is a hoax after all.  In a press release issued by the folks at Activision,  they stated the following:

“There seems to be a great deal of speculation about the next Call of Duty project. Let me be clear that we are not revealing [anything] yet. Anything indicating otherwise is a hoax.“

So it looks like we all have to wait a little bit longer before we receive official word that the game is truly under development. Fortunately, however, my industry contacts have indeed confirmed that the third installment in the series is slatted for release.  Exactly when and how the story will evolve, remains the million dollar question.

Continue reading »]]> It’s official!  Modern Warfare 3 is in development! Well almost…

It turns out that new website just released today is hinting at a major update.  The website in question findmakarov.com features a few brief sound bytes from Modern Warfare 2 and ends with a now famous count down timer. It just so happens that this timer is scheduled to reach zero on Wednesday, March 2nd which coincides with the Game Developers Conference to be held in San Francisco.  While the video itself only lasts a few seconds, it seems to indicate that we might finally get official confirmation that MWF3 is in development. Interestingly enough, the site that many people view as the official website for MWF3 (modernwarfare3.com) also seems to like directly to the video.
